Manchester United, in their perpetual state of flux, are reportedly circling Bruno Guimarães. The Newcastle midfielder, a genuine force at St. James' Park, has apparently caught the eye of Erik ten Hag, with figures around £80-£100 million being tossed around. It’s a lot of money for a club that just posted record revenues of £648.4 million but still feels like it’s chasing its tail on the pitch.

Guimarães signed an extension with Newcastle in October 2023, keeping him on Tyneside until 2028. That deal included a release clause, rumored to be north of £100 million, active this summer. He's been instrumental for Eddie Howe, scoring 14 goals and adding 13 assists in 107 appearances across all competitions for the Magpies since arriving in January 2022. The Brazilian’s energy and vision are undeniable; he completed 84.7% of his passes this past Premier League season, while also averaging 2.6 tackles per game. He’s a ball-winner, a deep-lying playmaker, and everything United thought they were getting in Casemiro two summers ago.

Here's the thing: United doesn't need another midfield general. They need a system. They need consistency. Casemiro, for all his Champions League pedigree, looked lost for long stretches this season, particularly in that brutal 4-0 loss to Crystal Palace on May 6th. Christian Eriksen, once lauded for his passing range, is largely a bench option now. Scott McTominay has his moments, but he’s not the long-term answer in a holding role. Acquiring Guimarães would push one of these guys further down the pecking order, but it wouldn't solve the structural problems that plague Old Trafford.

United's bigger issues lie elsewhere. They shipped 58 goals in the Premier League, their worst defensive record in the competition's history. Lisandro Martinez's injury woes were a major factor, limiting him to just 11 league appearances. Raphael Varane is gone. They need at least one, probably two, top-tier center-backs. And up front, despite Rasmus Hojlund’s promising 10 league goals, they desperately lack a consistent goal-scorer and a creative wide player who can reliably beat a man. Spending nine figures on a midfielder, however talented, feels like rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.

Meanwhile, across the Channel, clubs are sniffing around Bournemouth's Alex Scott. The 20-year-old midfielder, acquired by the Cherries from Bristol City for £25 million last summer, only made 20 league appearances in his debut Premier League season. He’s got flashes of brilliance, particularly in tight spaces, and his pass accuracy was a respectable 82.5%. But he’s not a world-beater, not yet anyway. Real Madrid, for example, is reportedly keeping tabs. That seems… ambitious.

Look, Guimarães is a fantastic player. If United had their house in order, if their defense was stout, if their attack was firing, then sure, add a Rolls-Royce like him to the midfield. But they don't. They're a leaky ship with a sputtering engine. Spending £100 million on Guimarães right now is a luxury they absolutely cannot afford. They need to address foundational issues, not buy another expensive piece for an already crowded, albeit underperforming, midfield. My hot take? United will spend big on Guimarães, and it won't move the needle one bit in their quest for a top-four finish next season. They'll still be looking up at Arsenal, Liverpool, and Manchester City.
